Shelter Point Double Barrel Batch 6 – 46% alc/vol

The bottle looks a bit different, but the huge, fruity whisky in Batch #6 is just as gorgeous as we’ve come to expect from Shelter Point. Each batch of Double Barrel has its own nuances as barrels, grain and processes are tweaked to suit the resources at hand. If you are keeping track, this sixth batch is reminiscent of Batch #3, which was also finished in French oak.

Making Batch #6

Six barrels of Shelter Point single malt whisky had spent 6 years maturing in new American oak barrels, before the whisky was given a final 99-day finishing in French oak, blackberry wine barrels from Vancouver Island’s renowned Coastal Black Winery.

A Double Barreled Tasting

A rich, fruity nose with hints of grape skins jumps right out of the bottle when you pull the cork for the first time. This is single malt whisky and just loaded with undisguised barley malt notes. Then finally, after a few sniffs those luscious Vancouver Island blackberries surge to the fore.

Sweet and very fruity flavours with some dark chocolate accents rule the big, bold, brilliant palate. Glowing peppery spices, fudge and more fruit follow before the whisky finishes on pepper, barrel tones and fading fruitiness, leaving herbal essences in the empty glass. Marvelous!

Supply Chain Dilemma

Now, about that square-shouldered bottle with its old-fashioned cork closure: Pandemic-related disruptions in delivery of bottles and boxes globally, has created difficulties for whisky makers large and small. And while some choose to await the arrival of traditional packaging, thank goodness the folks at Shelter Point know that when your whisky has built its reputation on flavour, it is best to bottle it when it is ready.

And with eager demand for the multi-award winning Double Barrel, they have substituted a more easily available bottle for their traditional round shouldered one with its glass Vinolok closure. Worry not, once the world gets back to normal and supply chains right themselves, the familiar bottle will return. But don’t wait for it. Do yourself a Batch #6 Double Barrel favour today.
