Lot No 40 Dark Oak
This gobsmakingly gorgeous new expression of Lot No. 40 Canadian whisky expands the rye flavour palate yet again. Canada is making killer rye whisky these days and in the process, demonstrating that the range of flavours derived from rye fermentations can be just as broad as that of single malts. If you love Lot No. 40, you will be awestruck by Dark Oak. Please, tell us this is not a one-off, or else let whisky enthusiasts and bartenders know they will have to stock up now.
Twice barreled in new oak, the label says, Dark Oak is first matured in richly flavourful no. 2 char, before being moved into No. 4 char barrels for finishing. The result is a five-star whisky sensation that balances depth and subtlety with commanding robustness. At 48% abv it has the power of cask strength without smothering the subtle flavours in too much alcohol.
Nose: Very aromatic with vanilla, turpentine, red wine vinegar, solid oak, the pickle notes of American straight rye (but I guarantee it is 100% Canadian), raisins, sweet apples, dry wood and applewood smoke.
Palate: Massive. Sweet inviting caramels, menthol, turpentine, loads of woody notes including pitch, clean grain, red grapes and cherries and brisk hot peppers which become spicier with hints of hot peppermint as the other flavours fade. Chewy in the middle, then drying.
Finish: Very long and woody with pitchy tone, some sweetness, and lingering hot peppers that fade into soft barley sugar sweetness.
Empty Glass: Heavy caramels, dried oak firewood, fudge and a slight dustiness.
